The automobile industry began in the 1860s with hundreds of manufacturers pioneering horseless carriages. For decades, the United States led the world in total automobile production. At that time, there was one car for every 4.87 people in America. After World War II, the United States produced about 75% of the world's automobiles. In 1980, the US was surpassed by Japan, then became the world leader again in 1994. In 2006, Japan nearly surpassed the US in output and maintained that ranking until 2009, when China took over first place with 13.8 million units. With 19.3 million units produced in 2012, China almost doubled US production with 10.3 million units, while Japan came in third place with 9.9 million units.
